Gravity

Gravity or The Space Tourist?

Rating: 3 of 5 Stars

I had the opportunity to watch the first night presentation of the 2D version of Gravity. I have to admit, I didn't have too many expectations about this movie. When I first was the trailer, I thought this looks like one of those movies with a very catchy trailer. It actually makes you dream how good the movie will be.

The first 15 minutes it makes you feel pleasant and your expectations start to grow about what will happen later. Effects are quiet good (which makes me think that we still haven't been in the moon for those that support the conspiracy theory about the moon visit). Then chaos strikes, a rain of space junk coming out of an apparent satellite blown by the russians hits their space shuttle where Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) were working. One of their colleague astronaut gets hit by the debris and die instantly. Before that incident the crew got told by Houston base to evacuate the immediately. However for some reason the writers decided that a trained astronaut, in this case Dr. Ryan would take some time because there is no rush. Like a spoiled little girl which does not understand that evacuate means EVACUATE NOW!

Well, from that point forward the film becomes nonsense with number of mistakes that Dr. Ryan obviously will be going through. The film apparently builds upon a number of rockie type of aspects of Dr. Ryan that would make some viewers feel restless and some disappointed that Dr. Ryan, a qualified astronaut can be so clumsy. Seriously, is a doctor and an astronaut, she is a skilled trained person. Strange that she forgot all that in space.

I know many people reading this will say "you have to be in that situation to make a proper judgment". Well I dont think that is necessary. Talk to a female police officer or a female firefighter, they will show you that in this cases you are prepared and you dont behave like a clumsy untrained little girl.

At another point there is fire in on of the sections of the ISS (International Space Station). Well Dr. Ryan again doesn't seem to know that in space there is no gravity and when she try to extinguish the fire she gets pushed against the wall by the trust generated by the fire extinguisher. She felt unconscious and the fire gets worse. Again, please writers is this astronaut there for holidays or was she trained properly. Houston, we have problem! for sending people like this to space!

Another question I have for NASA and everyone involved in the design of the ISS. Why does the ISS doesn't have an automatic fire extinguisher? a type of sprinkler? I understand the chances are that these fires could be generated due to electric shortcuts and there are fire extinguisher specific for these type of fires. Nothing new in this area I guess. Can somebody help here? Dr. Ryan Stone needs help.

There are a number of other situations that are similar and always seem to be related to Dr. Ryan's lack of expertise.

The visual effects are very good I should say, but it looks more like a film for people that will focus on the experience rather than the content. I will try the IMAX version to feel the trill, but in terms of storyline nothing more to say. I would suggest the writers to spend more time on the content next time. The future of movies is not 3D. People still analyses what they see.

For the viewers a word of advice: do not waste your hard earned money in 3D or 2D versions. This movie is like those amazing movies in Disneyland. It is about the experience. Without IMAX this movie could be an astronaut training program introduction movie.
